Subject: Archaeological Law Enforcement Training
To the Office of Historic Preservation,
The Smith River and Elk Valley Rancherias are jointly hosting an
Archaeological Law Enforcement Training November 13-15 in Crescent City
that I thought the OHP might be interested in hearing about. I've
attached the course flyer to this email for your reference. We've had a
couple of late cancellations so if you or anyone you know is interested,
there may still be room in the class.
The Tribes are very excited about this training--Archaeological Resource
Investigations (http://www.arinvestigations.net
<https://mail.elk-valley.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.arinve
stigations.net/> ) is a top notch firm, and the course instructor,
Martin McAllister, is a Registered Professional Archaeologist and
recognized national expert in this area of law enforcement.
Topics range from overviews of California and Federal cultural resource
laws, archaeological damage assessment, archaeological crime
investigation methods and the looting network. An archaeological crime
scene practical exercise is also included in the class. In this
exercise, class participants will carry out crime scene investigation
and field damage assessment procedures at a mock archaeological crime
scene. Each class participant will receive a binder of course materials
and a certificate upon successful completion of the class.
The Tribes are offering this training because we are deeply concerned
about recent and significant looting at archaeological sites in the
region. We regard this as an emergency situation and a top priority for
our THPO offices. Thus, we are very motivated to educate local law
enforcement personnel, ourselves, and other key individuals to protect
regional sacred and archaeological sites.
By the way, this Spring we will be hosting a Tribal Monitor training. If
you are interested in hearing more about this, please let me know.
