Re: Wildfires and Historic Resources

Not only is a fire a direct threat to a resource, but erosion and washouts during the ensuing rainy season can carry away a resource. For example, the Pinnacles National Monument in San Benito County suffered from a severe rain event in 1997 and the end result was a beautifully constructed 1930's era CCC bridge was carried away by flood water that deflected around a log jam and undermined the bridge's stone embankments. Had the NPS staff applied some common sense with a little bit of preventative maintenance to "buck" up vegetation and keep an eye on structures during the storm event I am confident the loss of this bridge would not have occurred.

Good luck everyone. Winter rains are coming.
