[Calclg-l] Congratulations Tuolumne County!

Late breaking news! I just heard from Shelly Davis-King, long time
member of Tuolumne County's Historic Preservation Review Commission,
that Tuolumne County has been designated a Preserve America Community.
Tuolumne County is the first and only county in the state of California
which has been so-designated, and one of only 52 counties or parishes
nation-wide (out of a total of 3143). Shelly emphasizes, "Not bad for a
small place. . . . If Tuolumne County can do this, so can the other
historic places in California."

Other California Certified Local Governments that are also Preserve
America Communities include:

*	Los Angeles' Chinatown, Thai Town, and Little Tokyo
*	Fresno
*	Monterey
*	Ontario
*	Richmond
*	Sacramento
*	San Clemente
*	San Juan Bautista
*	Santa Ana
*	Santa Monica
*	San Francisco's Japantown

Preserve American is a White House initiative that encourages and
supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our cultural and
natural heritage. One of the major components of the Preserve America
program is the designation of Preserve America Communities. The
Preserve America program states:

Benefits of designation include White House recognition; eligibility to
apply for Preserve America grants; a certificate of recognition; a
Preserve America Community road sign; authorization to use the Preserve
America logo on signs, flags, banners, and promotional materials;
listing in a Web-based Preserve America Community directory; inclusion
in national and regional press releases; official notification of
designation to state tourism offices and visitors bureaus; and enhanced
community visibility and pride. There are four quarterly deadlines
annually on March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1.

I encourage you to take up Shelly's challenge! See
www.preserveamerica.gov <http://www.preserveamerica.gov/>  for more
information.

Hello Cindy-- It is official!! You can go to the web page (
http://www.preserveamerica.gov/PAcommunities.html) and see Tuolumne
County listed-- as far as I can see, Tuolumne is the first and only
county in the state of California which has been so-designated, and one
of only 52 counties nation-wide (out of some 3143 counties or parishes).
Not bad for a small place-- hope you can emphasize that in your article.
If Tuolumne County can do this, so can the other historic places in
California.

Special thanks go to Vice Chair, Terry Brejla, and Commissioner Charla
Francis for their efforts in putting together the package, and following
through with the application, to County staff for their assistance, and
to our Board of Supervisors who supported the application. Let us know
if you'd like additional information for the announcement on the clg
listserv. I think it also deserves an announcement in the next
Preservation Matters-- what do you think?

Shelly

	Shelly,

	Congratulations on your pending Preserve America Community
Designation. When it is official, let me know and we will announce it
on the clg listserv. Thanks for your kind words about our participation
in the Tuolumne County workshop. You had a great registration flyer, a
reasonable registration fee, good venue, good agenda, and good food!!
And, the program ran on time! I think it was interesting at the
distance people came to attend-Santa Cruz, Sausalito, Ukiah. Please let
us know how we can assist in future workshops. About the website-I'm
not sure what kind of assistance or advice you need, but you may want to
contact Marie Nelson who manages OHP's website at mnelson at parks.ca.gov.

	Dear Steve and Wayne-- Thank you so much for your glowing
letter in support of Tuolumne County's application for a Preserve
America Community Designation. Your strong letter was, I am sure, part
of the reason we have unofficially heard that our application has been
recommended for approval and forwarded to the White House! We will keep
you posted, but want you to know how much we appreciate your continued
support.

	Also, thanks go to your staff for their support and assistance
on our recent Cultural Resources workshop. It was a great success we
believe, with good attendance, and may be something we consider on an
annual or two-year basis.

	And finally, in Tuolumne County we are considering a webpage
much like www.CalaverasHistory.org and wonder if there is anyone in your
office with experience in CLG-related websites?

	Thanks again, and best wishes to you both

	(Sorry I missed seeing you at your work day in Columbia, Wayne)
	Shelly
