City of Berkeley

1. I am the City's dedicated preservation planner, which is a full-time position. We have more than 370 designated properties, which includes properties in a number of historic districts. The City's population is 102,743.

2. There is more than enough work for me to focus solely on preservation.

3. Because of the workload and the complexity and issues associated with preservation in Berkeley there was a need to have a planner dedicated to this task.

4. Having me on staff has added a higher level of professionalism and dedication to running the City's preservation program and commission that was really needed. Previously, the position was rotated among the planners.

5. There is definitely a high level of synergy among the project planners and me. They now have someone that they and the community can consult and refer to for issues involving historic resources.

6. I think there is definitely the perception that the costs for a planner focused on preservation has been worth it.

7. We have an Office of Energy & Sustainable Development that is part of our department and I have been working more and more closely with them regarding the City's green building requirements and historic structures. I also meet jointly with them and applicants when discussing greening historic buildings.

Subject: [Calclg-l] Preservation planners

Greetings to all CLG folks

I¹d like to know from CLG cities the following:
1. IF you have a dedicated preservation planner, how many historical
resources does this individual look-over? And what is the population of your
city/town?
2. Does this planner collaborate with other planners on other projects or is
there enough work to focus solely on Historical structures?
3. Why was it deemed necessary to hire a preservation planner in your
community?
4. How do you feel this person has benefited your historic resources, your
community
5. Is there a synergy, good cooperation between this planner and other
departmental staff or is the planner seen as a hindrance?
6. Is it perceived that the costs for this focused planner has been worth
it?
7. Is this planner being integrated into Green Building ordinance work?
8. --any added commentary you may feel necessary to add--

Thank you
Wendy Ward
